The last 32: ties 13-16

Another three one-sided contests, but also one nail-biter...


13. Maniac v Hard, Fast and Beautiful

There was quite a lot of positivity regarding 'Maniac'. John, for example, considered it to be 'Gedge at his menacing best.' But, as Johnny put it, the 'perfect pop of "Maniac"' was 'unfortunately... washed away by the dirty, filthy, unwashed tidal surge of "Hard, Fast and Beautiful".'

14. Get Up and Go v Quick Before It Melts

Rather closer than I expected. Derek found it 'a tough choice,' while John went as far as to describe this tie as 'like choosing which of your children you love the best.' It really went down to the wire, with the score being 10-9 before the final vote came in.

15. Your Time Starts Now v Wow

Like tie 13, there was quite a bit of sympathy for the loser. In fact, Gricey surprised himself by going for the underdog: 'I really love YTSN but thought my appreciation of "Wow" was deeper... I think the gentle melody and sentiment won it.' In the end, though, as Keg put it, YTSN was 'steam rollered by the mighty "Wow" in another easy win.'

As is so often the case, it's worth quoting Johnny, who ended up on the losing side this time:

Two monumental behemoths, a status bestowed for polar opposite reasons going head to head in an aural battle to the death, and whilst Wow! is an undisputed, unabashed mighty epic, a wild, joyous desperate primal scream with a heart rending storyline battered and bruised in the most wonderful way by the brutalism of the filthy, raging guitars, given a clearer, calmer world view I have decided that if I can only have one of them in my life it would need to be Your Time Starts Now.

Magnificent. He built it all up with the black noise of that other band he was in and then tore it all down with this into a whimpering, shivering heap of simple, soft, gentle devastation. Absolutely beautiful, torridly, achingly beautiful.

I know that this is a futile vote, but it’s my vote and to me it’s valid.

16. Heels v Honey Rider

A little more divisive, this one. Derek's comment was: 'I don't think there was ever a Bond girl named 'Heels', but if there were, Honey Rider would mop the floor with her.' On the other hand, Gricey surprised himself again:  

I think I lump Heels in with Unzip but I loved listening to it this time. The crazy warbling cello sound in the background added to my liking of the track this time compared to the mediocre (but pleasant) sound of Honey Rider.

Cinerama Cup: Group D

        A reminder of how the point-scoring works: The panel must award a total of 36 points No song may receive more than 12 points At least one point must be given to 5 songs (i.e. no more than three zeros)  Group D Au Pair As If Your Time Starts Now Two Girls Heels Close Up And When She Was Bad Girl on a Motorcycle The Results A very clear winner this time, with 'And When She Was Bad' finishing 39 points ahead of its nearest rival. The fact that it marks, as Gav M put it, 'a bridge from Cinerama to the Wedding Present in one song,' was undoubtedly a key factor in its success - although a few did express reservations about the lyric. The remaining qualifiers, although some distance behind, were still comfortably ahead of the bottom half of the table. 'Heels' (which I placed at number four on my blog ranking) is, in my estimation, gloriously gorgeous and epitomises the best of what Cinerama were about. Cinerama Cup: Preliminary Group 1

   To streamline the process a little bit, we're going to spend the first couple of posts considering the 25 songs that are either covers, early versions of what became TWP recordings or tracks from the 2015 version of Valentina . The panel were asked for 'Eurovision' style votes (i.e. 12, 10, 8, 7, 6....). The winner from each of these two groups, plus the highest-scoring runner-up, will join the other 61 songs in the first 'proper' stage.
