Cinerama Cup: Last 32 (1-4)
The last 32: ties 1-4
1. Cat Girl Tights v Estrella
No surprises here, with the clearest victory of this set going to 'Cat Girl Tights'. Gav M went for 'Estrella' (another of his 'personal history' songs: 'the ultimate biographical song that I lived in real time') as did Johnny ('a bona fide, top notch, right rollicking bonanza!') but John's support for CTG was more representative of the majority: 'Beautiful melody and sweeping arpeggios - stunning.' Harry was particularly emphatic: 'Cat Girl Tights by the length of Sauchiehall Street.'
Cat Girl Tights 15 - Estrella 5
2. Edinburgh v Barefoot in the Park
This one was a little closer, with several judges indicating that it was a difficult decision. This time, Harry's unequivocal view ('Edinburgh by the length of Princess Street') was not that of the majority.
Edinburgh 8 - Barefoot in the Park 12
3. Health and Efficiency v 146 Degrees
Closer than I thought it might be - this tie was actually really tight until the last few votes, with a few judges surprising themselves by ending up voting for '146 Degress'. Gav M, for example, said 'assumed I was going for H&E, but repeated listens of 146 Degrees have led me to see this as a bit of slow burning classic - great song.'
Health and Efficiency 12 - 146 Degrees 8
4. Careless v 10 Denier
Having explained my views on these songs at length on the blogs, I only occasionally include my own opinions here, but I have to say that I am deeply, deeply disappointed to see this result. Kirk's comment that this tie represented 'one of the worst singles v one of the best b-sides' is slightly harsh on 'Careless', which is a solid enough tune; but it does feel prosaic and workmanlike in comparison to the glorious '10 Denier', which Johnny described as 'an unavoidable volley of exhilarating, flirty, full on gorgeousness' and Steve M summed up as 'perfect.' I'm reminded of this. *sighs*
Careless 11 - 10 Denier 9
